A book club weekend works best when the plan is loose. Pick one book, one outing, and one long dinner, and leave the rest of the time for reading, talking, and the view.
Here's how we'd spend three days in Boone with a group of eight.
Before you go
- Choose the book early. Give everyone at least a month. Books with a strong central question make for the best discussions; The Nightingale and Anxious People are both on our shelves.
- Book the whole house. Both units connect by an interior staircase, so the group can spread out at night and gather in one living room for the discussion.
- Assign meals. Two people cook Friday, two cover Saturday breakfast, and everyone goes out Saturday night.
Friday: arrive and settle in
Aim to arrive before dark. The drive up the mountain is beautiful, and it's easier to find the house in daylight.
Once everyone's in, take drinks out to the deck. Save the real discussion for Saturday; Friday night is for catching up, a simple dinner, and browsing the shelves.
Saturday: one outing, then the discussion
Spend the morning outside while you're fresh:
- Drive a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Pull over at the overlooks, and bring a thermos.
- Walk downtown Boone. King Street has coffee shops, a Mast General Store, and places to sit and read for an hour.
- Come back by mid-afternoon for a nap or a last chapter.
Hold the discussion before dinner, while everyone has energy. Then go out to eat and let the conversation keep going.
Sunday: slow morning, next month's book
Make coffee, take it to the deck, and watch the sun come up over the ridges. Before you pack up, pick next month's book from the shelves. Guests often leave with a new favorite, like The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry or Legends & Lattes.
Discussion questions that work for almost any book
- Which character would you most want to spend a weekend with, and why?
- What did the ending change about how you saw the beginning?
- If you could ask the author one question, what would it be?
- Which scene would you cut, and which would you make longer?
